Welcome to the 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh webpage. My name is Lieutenant Colonel Luke and I have the great privilege of commanding the 1st Battalion. We are 96% Welsh and recruit from across Wales; many soldiers serve with relatives or close friends in the same Battalion. We are an extremely busy Battalion; we play and work very hard.
Whilst operations, training, sport and adventurous training sum up our activity, we have to live somewhere. We are very lucky as the Battalion is based in Tidworth, Wiltshire which is just south of Swindon (on the M4) and only about 90 minutes from most of the soldiers’ homes in South Wales. Where possible I run a short week starting at 1000hrs on Monday and finishing lunchtime on Friday so that we can all get three nights at home every week.
We are in a brand new barracks with modern, en-suite single rooms, and excellent sports facilities. Our families are in a choice of older, cheaper houses or some brand new ones which are state of the art. The children have a choice of primary schools and a secondary school which gained academy status in 2009. So we have a firm and friendly base to work from; our little bit of Wales in Wiltshire. Take some time to look at the rest of our website to learn more about life in the 1st Battalion the Royal Welsh.
