Dedication of the Royal Welsh Memorial

9 September 2017

Following a very successful fund raising effort the RWELSH Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum has been refurbished and extended. I would like to thank the many Comrades Branches that contributed to this very fitting project.

A service of dedication will take place on Saturday 9 September. The National Memorial Arboretum is at Croxall Road, Alrewas, STAFFORDSHIRE, DE13 7AR.

Timings

  •  NLT 1145 hrs – all arrive at the NMA

  •  1200 – 1230 hrs Memorial Service at the RWELSH Memorial

  •  1230 – 1315 hrs Chance for Bereaved Familles to go to the Bastion Wall or the Basra Wall

  •  1320 – 1330 move to the Royal British Legion

  •  1345 – 1500 hrs Lunch

  •  1530 - 1830 hrs Return journey Service

The service will be led by the Reverend Major General RM Llewellyn CB OBE OStJ DL supported by the Padres of the 1st and 3rd Battalions. It will consist of a number of prayers, readings, 2 x hymns, the Last Post, wreath laying and the National Anthems.

RHQ will produce an Order of Service and the wreaths. The Royal Welsh Band will play. Readings will be done by a variety of senior officers, retired officers and the Regimental Sergeant Major 1st Battalion. During the service there will be the opportunity for a representative from each of the RWELSH Bereaved Families to lay a wreath which RHQ will provide.

The Colonel of the Regiment will lay a wreath on behalf of the Regiment. Selected comrades will lay wreaths for our antecedent regiments and after the service Branches may lay wreaths if they wish. Due to the relatively constricted space around the memorial and the number of people expected to attend there will be no seating. There are 4 elements of singing where I would wish the Comrades to come into their own:

  • I vow to thee my Country

  • Cwm Rhondda

  • Welsh National Anthem

  • The National Anthem

Branches are encouraged to bring Branch Standards and use them to pay the usual respects for the Last Post and the National Anthems. Bereaved Family members attending There will be approximately 40+ family members attending. Each of our bereaved families I hope will be represented. Senior Military Personnel Present The following senior Royal Welsh personnel will be present and will take part in the ceremony:

  • Major General James Swift OBE – the Colonel of the Regiment

  • Reverend Major General RM Llewellyn CB OBE OStJ DL

  • Colonel David Wheeler

In addition there will be small parties from 1st Battalion and 3rd Battalion including some of the friends of those KIA.

Members of RHQ will be attending. Transport Comrades’ Branches are to organise transport in liaison with RHQ Wrexham. All should aim to arrive by 1130 hrs to enable movement from parking area to RWELSH Memorial via a comfort break etc. Lunch A Buffet Lunch will be taken at the Royal British Legion (RBL) which is about a mile from the NMA. The address of the RBL is Rykneld Street, Alrewas, Burton-on-Trent, DE13 7AX. The Bereaved Families and VIPs are to take lunch before any of the Comrades Branches. Comrades are to move using their own transport to the RBL. Following lunch Comrades’ transport will take personnel back to home location. Costs Cost for transport and lunch will be £10 a head. This figure is being heavily subsidised by RHQ. Lunch alone is costing in the region of £8 a head. We will call for returns for transport and lunch later in the summer.

Dress For Comrades blazer and greys Regimental ties, full size medals and Regimental headdress as appropriate. Military personnel are to wear Service Dress with Sam Browne and medals.

I am very grateful and proud that so many of the Comrades Branches have decided to come to the NMA for the Service. It will be a very emotional day our Bereaved Families.
