The road to Japan for the tri-services Rugby team began in July with a selection day. Players from all three services attended a two-day training camp in Portsmouth.  If selected, we would all be meeting in September ready to fly to the International Defence World Cup (IDRC) in Japan.

September came and the good news had arrived and both Cpl Evans and Cpl Smith from The Royal Welsh had made the cut!

Once we had flown out to Narita, the UK Armed Forces team stayed just a short distance from the Narita airport. Training was underway immediately as the first game against the Georgian defence force was only four days after landing....

Mountain biking (MTB) is rising in popularity throughout society and the regiment is no different with growing numbers taking up the sport.

Several disciplines within MTB allow for a wide variety of activities, ranging from tough physical races over technical terrain known as cross country (XC) to the more adrenaline filled Downhill (DH), which sees participants throwing themselves down mountains in the fastest time possible over some seriously challenging terrain.

The pinnacle of the DH season culminates in the inter-service DH event that is held each year. This year the championships were held at the auspicious Revolution bike...

Once again, the 3rd Battalion hosted a successful unit skiing expedition to the glorious French Alps, returning to Meribel-Motterat and Les Trois Vallées. Home to the largest ski area in the world and consisting of over 300 ski runs and plenty of off piste, it was an excellent location to return to for the delivery of a range of Joint Service Alpine ski courses at various levels.

A total of 39 personnel took part, including a student from London UOTC and three external ski instructors. Deploying on the 15th March, the main party left the familiar sights of Cardiff for the snow-covered slopes of Meribel. After a 25-hour long coa...

The Nordic Skiing season started in mid-November for the 1 R WELSH team. A team of 8 deployed to Idre-Fjall in Sweden for the pre-competition training package organised by Infantry Nordic. There were some familiar faces in the team who brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team, notably Cpl Morris of B Coy who is also a Nordic Skiing instructor having done 7 seasons previously. These were joined by 6 of the team who had never heard of Nordic Skiing!

Idre-Fjall, Sweden was the perfect setup for a Nordic Skiing camp, it was a leading venue with perfect snow conditions and a state-of-the-art range complex. The camp w...

Ex FROSTED BLADE is the annual Infantry ski championship held in Val d’Isere (France). Run for five weeks over the Christmas period, the exercise aims to test Infantry soldiers both physically and mentally whilst developing them as race skiers who will compete at the Divisional and Army championships. Ex FROSTED BLADE caters for all ability levels and provides a venue where all Infantry Battalions can race against each other in the four alpine ski disciplines.

This year the 1st Battalion’s team of 8 was made up from 5 novice and 3 experienced skiers. The team arrived on the evening of Saturday 8th December but did not start t...

3 Royal Welsh’s football team are through to the next round of the Army Reserve Cup and are looking forward to winning their first trophy!

3 Royal Welsh moved into the quarter-finals of the Army Reserve Cup with a hard fought 1-0 win against 167 Regiment RLC at Vauxhall Motors in Ellesmere Port. A strong wind made playing conditions difficult and an experienced RLC team that contained five members of the Army Reserve side made a tough and challenging contest.

It took a well taken header by Fusilier Luke Fountain on the stroke of half time to break the deadlock and give the Royal Welsh a deserved lead. In the second half they mis...

The move from one job to the next was made far more exciting this year with the need to up sticks from Tidworth and move to the self-styled `true North`, Canada. As part of an exchange programme, I swapped places with my Canadian counterpart, Capt Jon Leforte and took over as as company 2IC within the light role battalion of the Royal 22nd Regiment (R22R). The ``Vandoos``, as they are known are based in Quebec City, Quebec, the Francophone province on the eastern side of the country. The Regiment was formed in 1914 to represent the thousands of Franco-Canadians who wished to serve in a French speaking unit.

Arriving in Septem...
